THE WINTER PARK AT CIVIC CENTER, AN ALL-NEW ICE EXPERIENCE, CELEBRATES INAUGURAL SEASON OF SKATING AND FESTIVE EVENTS
The Winter Park at Civic Center, an all-new ice experience steps away from San Francisco’s City Hall is now open. It celebrated its inaugural season of skating and festive events with an official opening day ceremony, featuring remarks from Mayor London N. Breed, Phil Ginsburg (General Manager of the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department), Willy Bietak (President of Willy Bietak Productions), and Olympic gold medal-winning figure skater Brian Boitano. Entertainment was provided by international “ice-hooping” performer Mayumi Namikoshi, professional skating pair Cali Fujimoto & Nick Barsi-Rhyne, The San Francisco Ice Theatre, children from the Yerba Buena Ice Skating Center, and more. Afterwards, 200 children from San Francisco City Academy, Redding Elementary, and Boitano’s Youth Skate program took to the ice for the first skate of the season.
Modeled after the internationally-famed Wiener Eistraum—an ice-skating rink located in the City Hall Square of Vienna, Austria—The Winter Park is the first attraction of its kind, not just in the Bay Area but throughout the United States. Nestled among other cultural institutions like the Asian Art Museum, American Conservatory Theater’s Strand Theater, San Francisco Public Library, Davies Symphony Hall and City Hall, the ice rink and 400 sq. ft. track weaves through a lighted tree forest. The Winter Park will continue to expand, evolving into an adventure park on ice with new interactive elements for the whole family added each year.
